If you're a first time gardener, it's best to start with a small area, so you don't feel overwhelmed.

Make a Flower Bed (continued)
Choose your site
Take a good look around your prospective garden and decide where you want your flower bed (or beds) to be. The best areas for flower beds tend to be bordering other structures--for example, next to a wall, or around the base of a tree. Take note of your garden's measurements, and make a sketch of the area. Mark the sun conditions in terms of full sun, partial sun, high shade, and low shade.
Next, check out your dirt. If you find a yard full of dark, rich soil, count your blessings. Most likely, however, you'll find your soil is either compact and clay-like, or sandy. If either of these is the case, you'll need to prepare the soil before you plant.
Finally, make sure you have an outdoor water source. If you don't, you'll be hauling a lot of watering cans, and you may want to limit your flowers to a small bed near the house.
