Step 5Retrieve your food

Well, now that all your food is hanging in a tree, you'll need to get it back down for your next meal. Fortunately, you didn't use that long stick for firewood last night. Right? Right!?

  • Reach up with the stick, and poke the end of it through the loop that you left hanging outside the bag. Pull the rope loose, so that the rope end tumbles to the ground.

  • Pull the rope down until you can untie the lighter of the two bags. Now you can lower the remaining bag until it touches the ground.
  • If you're leaving the campsite, pull the rope back over the limb carefully to retrieve it and store it in your pack. If you're remaining in the campsite, leave the rope over the limb, to be used at the next storage opportunity. If it's a windy day and you want to leave the rope on the limb, consider anchoring the ends: tie them to a rock or the tree, or else the wind may blow the rope off the limb.
