2torial #0833:
Learn2 Stop a Nosebleed
(continued)

Prevent nosebleeds,
long-term
There are also a few things to keep in mind for
the long term, which can help reduce the number
of nosebleeds suffered.
- Nosebleeds often occur when the air is very
dry, so keep a humidifier in the room. This is
particularly helpful in wintertime.
- Don't dry out. Keeping the inside of
your nose lubricated can also be helpful in dry
climates. One of the best remedies is tea tree
oil: gently rub a few drops of oil into the
nasal passages. (Tea tree oil is now available
at health food stores and even some major
supermarkets.) If you don't have any of that on
hand, take a pea-sized amount of cream or
ointment (say, first-aid cream or white
petroleum jelly) on the end of your finger and
rub it inside your nose. Both remedies work well
before bedtime.
- Encourage kids not to pick their
noses. Picking noses can easily lead to
nosebleeds. Encourage them to blow their noses
instead, using a cloth handkerchief to remove
dried mucus from their nose. In the interim,
keeping their fingernails trimmed short will
reduce the chance of nosebleed.
