Step 3
Prevent nosebleeds, short-term

You can do a few things right away to help prevent the bleeding from starting again.

  • Leave the nose alone. As the blood dries, it may feel itchy or odd, but resist the temptation to touch this area. If you disturb the nose by picking or blowing it, you may send yourself back to Step 1 of this 2torial.
  • Don't pack it in. Stuffing the bleeding nostril with cotton may keep the blood from spilling, but it's not a good solution. The cotton may be difficult to remove once the blood has dried.
  • Hang tight. Try to sit quietly for several minutes, even if the bleeding has stopped. Any sudden motion or exertion may re-open the clotted blood vessel. If you can avoid it, don't bend over to pick up anything, either.
