Step 1
Stop the blood flow

  • Get them in the right position.

Keeping the person's head above their heart (i.e. sitting or standing erect) reduces the pressure on the broken blood vessel, and therefore reduces the flow of blood from the nose.

Have the person sit up straight or stand up, and keep their head level. Tilting the head back, as was sometimes advised in the past, can cause the blood to flow down the throat and into the stomach. This can nauseate the person and cause them to vomit, which would clearly aggravate the situation.

  • Calm the person down, especially if they're a young child. A person who's agitated may bleed more profusely than someone who's been reassured and supported.
