2torial #0600:
Learn2
Write a Letter of Recommendation (continued)
List the qualities
Once you're familiar with the person, break down the information you've gathered into categories:
- Personal. What positive qualities does the person have? For example, a sense of humor, the ability to wear many hats, or the ability see the big picture.
- Professional. What specific projects has the person accomplished? In what areas does he or she excel? How would you rate the person, given your experience with his or her particular work?
- Weaknesses. Although the qualities you list should be positive overall, a recommendation with nothing but positive remarks could cause some skepticism. Everyone has weaknesses--the key is to talk about those the person was able to overcome.
- Future potential. How and why will the person be a good addition to the place or person receiving the letter? What can they expect in terms of the person's goals and possibilities of growth?
