Learn2 Understand American Football
1st and 10, do it AGAIN!
Everywhere in this world but in the United
States, when people talk about "football", they're
talking about "soccer." When you're in the US.
though, "football" means the NFL, which means the
National Football League.
Football in the United States is a fairly
straightforward game. As in any sport, though,
there's an extraordinary number of standards and
rules designed to apply to any conceivable
situation. Keeping track of all these rules, as
well as knowing the intricacies of offensive and
defensive schemes, are beyond the scope of this
tutorial. Your local library or bookstore has a
wealth of information for anyone who wants to coach
their neighborhood team...But if you'd like to be
able to simply enjoy the game and understand what's
happening on the field, read on!
A big part of the excitement of football comes from the energy
of the fans. Few sports have a fan base as devoted as
this (some families trace their allegiances back for
generations), so the best way to introduce yourself
to the game is to attend a professional or college game
and see the fans, and the players, in action.
However, with all those devotees, tickets can be hard
to get (and expensive), so the second best introduction
is to set up your own private stadium. On a televised
game day, invite some friends who are fans over to your
home, cook up a bowl of chili or prepare some dip, buy
some beverages, pick your team and root for them with
all your ever-loving might.
