Learn2 Cope with a Crying Child

"I just can't get him to stop crying!"

A crying baby can create a very frustrating situation for even the most patient adult. Something is wrong, but what? It's a big, confusing world, and babies aren't the only ones who can feel helpless.

Before You Begin

Don't get frustrated: babies can't use words, and crying is their way of communicating. Try different approaches, but give each approach time enough to work before trying something new.

Step 1Prevent

The most important steps can be made before the baby ever begins to cry. Try these steps as prevention:

  • Be consistent in your actions: most babies like ritual. Try to prevent crying by keeping to the same schedules in feeding, changing, and naptime.

  • Provide the baby with as much attention as possible early on. Proximity will provide the adult with a better understanding of the baby's needs and thus create a better relationship.

  • Tend to the baby's diet: Consult your pediatrician to understand your baby's nutritional requirements.

Step 2Respond

Respond quickly to the crying. There's no telling what the reasons for your baby's crying until you investigate. And don't worry, it's practically impossible to spoil baby by rapid attention. The longer a baby cries, the more difficult the interpretation.

The obvious problems should be examined first, such as the full diapers (change), empty bottles (fill), or a full gas tank (burp). But once these have been evaluated, it's time to research.

Step 3Adjust

Sometimes minor physical changes are necessary to settle the baby's nerves.

  • Rock gently: rock the baby in your arms or a cradle or carriage. Do not shake the baby, as this can harm him or her.

  • Take a walk: Go for a walk with the baby in a carrier, in a sling, or in your arms.

  • Pass the baby off: A fresh set of arms can do wonders. It can be amazingly straining to care for a crying baby, and the baby can sense your anguish.

  • Go for a ride: When they need to relax, babies generally respond well to car rides and stroller rides. Remember - you drive. Please secure the baby in an approved car seat before starting the engine.

  • Adjust excitement: A new world, new faces, new language: there is a lot of excitement involved with being a baby. Limit visitors if it becomes too much for the baby.

Adjust air intake: Gulping of air can cause great discomfort for baby. If you keep the baby upright during feeding, you will keep the air intake at a minimum.

Step 4Accommodate

You need not drop what you're doing and lose your composure every time the baby cries: a few minutes of crying is not going to harm the child. But here are some ways to attend to the crying when you are trying to understand the cause:

  • Communicate: Entertain the baby by speaking to it and narrating your activities.

  • Cuddle the baby: Hold the baby close to your chest to give the baby a sense of security.

  • Sing, sing a song: If your baby enjoys your singing, or perhaps just one song, hurrah! Sing it again. Even your humming or the humming of a fan may relax the child.

  • Give the baby a massage: Most babies enjoy being caressed, either on the back, arms or legs.

  • Give the baby a bath: Some babies enjoy a warm (not hot!) bath.
